This is done by professing the singular nature of god and denouncing other gods, as well as the messengership of Muhammad in a statement: “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.” Shi’ites add “and ‘Ali is the Master of the believers.” In addition to this, Muslims are required to tell others of Islam. However, the Qur’an denounces the use of persuasion in spreading the message:
Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out. Clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in God hath grasped the most trustworthy handhold, that never breaks.”
